Renovation and Recovery of Historic Homes

Renovation and recovery are often necessary for preservation of Texas Historic Homes after events like flooding, fire or just many years of neglect of the home. Here are some resources and information on restring a historic home or recovering from a disaster like a flood. Floods can occur both from internal and external sources. Inside the home a water heater may burst or plumbing may leak and cause water damage. Excessive and rapid rain may cause flood waters to rise, flooding the home.

Here are some great tips for recovery after flooding from the National Trust For Historic Preservation

Bee Removal Damage to ceiling

This 1866 home at 600 S Bagdad in Leander Texas 78641 had a honey bee infestation that had to be removed. In this photo you can see the black plastic sheeting on the ceiling above the fireplace which was one access point. There were other places too where the bee removal specialist had to remove areas of the house to gain access to the bees’ location for removal. Thankfully, I was involved as a Certified Historic House Specialist REALTOR to sell the home and found a buyer who is working with the Texas Historical Commission to restore the home as much as possible to its original appearance.

I love historic homes and buildings and wish I had the funds to save them all! To get needed funds to renovate or recover you might consider publicizing your unfortunate event or renovation project with photos and video and perhaps set up a Go Fund Me campaign page. If you are renovating a historic home, I’d love to hear about it. Perhaps you have ideas or information to share. Thanks! Betty Saenz
