Clarksville is a charming old Austin neighborhood that was founded and named after freedman Charles Clark, in 1871. Clarksville is the oldest surviving freedman’s town settled by former African-American slaves post Civil War west of the Mississippi River. This neighborhood is centered around Austin’s Clarksville Historic District.
